Buying Into Title IX Doubletalk at the University of Delaware

While the administration at the University of Delaware decided to ignore NCAA President Myles Brand’s edict not to blame Title IX for the end of the Men’s Indoor Track program, the folks who run the student newspaper don’t seem to mind resorting to Orwellian twists of the language to cover up what happened:

University President Patrick Harker, Edgar Johnson, director of athletics, and Jim Fischer, men’s cross country and track and field coach, were quoted in a Dec. 10 News Journal story about changes to the athletics program because of Title IX. The University will de-emphasize men’s indoor track and add women’s golf as a varsity sport.

Tell me, on what planet do the words de-emphasize and eliminate mean exactly the same thing?
