Title IX compliance cited for team cuts in MN and NM.

Following the playbook written by its Title IX consultant, the University of New Mexico eliminated its programs for men’s soccer, men’s and women’s skiing, and women’s beach volleyball. The administration also instituted roster caps on men’s track and cross- country teams to bring its athletic department into compliance with Title IX’s proportionality test, as per the consultant’s recommendations.

Two schools in Minnesota have also announced plans to eliminate teams. Minnesota Crookston will drop its football program and St. Cloud State University (SCSU) will cut multiple teams after losing a Title IX lawsuit, which was filed in response to SCSU terminating 6 teams in 2016.

As reported in the Star Tibune,

“St. Cloud State President Robbyn Wacker said the move will address both a budget shortfall and the school’s struggles to comply with federal Title IX regulations. SCSU also will cut men’s and women’s golf, and it will add men’s soccer.”
