Updating the Numbers on the HBCU Study

We just got a call from Rainer Sabin, a reporter at the Virginian-Pilot. He found an omission in our study, as it seems we inadvertently excluded Norfolk State University from the original analysis. So we went back to look at the data, and here’s what we found:

NSU has 4,459 students (1,713 male and 2,746 female) according to the Department of Education data for the 2006-07 academic year. The gender ratio of the student body is 38.42% male and 61.58% female. There are 166 male athletes and 71 female, which makes the ratio of the athletic department 70.04% male and 29.96% female. That makes NSU 31.62% out of proportion. According to the Women’s Sports Foundation, that would earn the school an “F”.

To achieve the strict proportionality standard, NSU would have to have to cut 77 male athletes.

We’re in the midst of updating all of our online materials. The CSC regrets the error, and thanks Rainer for pointing it out to us.
