MIT Cuts Eight Sports

The bloodletting in intercollegiate athletics continues. From the AP:

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, with one of the deepest college athletic programs in the nation, says it will cut eight of its 41 varsity sports in a money-saving move.Student Life Dean Costantino Colombo and athletic director Julie Soriero said in a letter posted on the university’s Web site Thursday that alpine skiing, golf, men’s and women’s ice hockey, men’s and women’s gymnastics, pistol and wrestling will be eliminated at the end of the academic year.

Along with the announcement, MIT issued a canned Q&A about the cuts. Here’s the critical excerpt:

How will these cuts influence MIT’s standing with Title IX?

Title IX has been part of every reduction model and consideration.

Well, at least they were honest about it.
